OBD protocols - from SAE J1979 Classic, over SAE J1979-2/-3 and SAE J1939-73, to OBDonSOVD2024-03-13
An overview of different OBD protocols and the difference between them. Many may know SAE J1979 (Classic) but there are some parts which pops up frequently. Some may know SAE J1939-73 but not the difference to SAE J1979 Classic or the OBDonUDS documents. Finally - the latest information from ASAM of how OBDonSOVD could work and examples of how to get SOVD data from either a passenger car (Utilizing OBDonUDS) or a truck utilizing SAE J1939.

Diagnostic Communication with Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Using ISO 14229-5 (UDS on IP) and SAE J1979-3 (ZEV on UDS)2024-04-09
2024-01-1985
SAE J1979 and its “OBD Modes” served for the protection of our environment against harmful pollutants for decades, but due to regulatory adoption of Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS), SAE J1979 has now become a multiple part document series: SAE J1979 will be replaced by SAE J1979-2 for vehicles with combustion engines (ICEs) and by SAE J1979-3 for Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) propulsion systems. ...Both SAE J1979-2 and -3 are variants of ISO 14229 (UDS) but limited to emission-related and ZEV propulsion-related failures, respectively, and associated diagnostic data.

But OBD (OnBoard Diagnostic) under the emissions regulation is not yet updated for this shift of protocols and therefore vehicle manufacturers must support older OBD protocols (e.g., SAE J1979-2) during the transition phase. Another problem is that some of the software packages may fall under the DEC-ECU (diagnostic or emission critical electronic control unit) definition and need to communicate with an OBD scan tool.
